I’m on! That took a while.

Blocks loaded in all around me as I took my first few steps on the Factionfall server.

—Entering RED Land—

Okay… “RED Land”, cool.

A player came running towards me. Hitting ‘Shift’ and ‘W’ I started sprinting away but they were faster. I ran under a low tree and hopped up and down, making me go faster but draining my hunger.

What da hell does this guy want?

I ran straight into another player with Barbarian #7 above his head. He cornered me against the tree trunk and started critting me. I spammed my mouse trying to make him stop hitting me even if I wasn’t dealing damage, it wasn’t helping. I was on 3 hearts now and the guy wasn’t stopping. I’d only hit him a few times when the player from before pulled out a club and started slapping Barbarian with it. Barbarian #7 started flashing red and I took the chance to strafe out of the combo and start hitting him from the side while the other player took his front. He eventually died with a nice poof and I swore the player paused as if he was talking. The player kept looking at me.

[RED] Player: < broo join vc >

Ohhh.

[NEUTRAL] Me: < dont have it, where should i download it? >

[RED] Player: < shouvlde poped up for u wen u joined >

[NEUTRAL] Me: < ohhh, i see it now >

[RED] Player: “…Can you hear me?”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “Yup. Can you hear me?”

[RED] Player: “Yeah, finally.”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “What was that before?”

[RED] Player: “A barbarian, you just joined so you don’t have anything, let’s go to main camp.”

[Neutral] Me: “Sure.”

- - -

[RED] Player: “Up here.”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “Alright. I forgot to ask, why can’t I see your username?”

[RED] Player: “Mod thing I think, not sure why. I’m Floofen though.”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “Nair. Thanks for the save back there.”

[RED] Player: “You too. We’re here.”

The rough main camp sat in the saddle of two large black mountains.

[RED] [Soldier] Neverhast: “Queen wants to see you Floofen.”

[RED] Player: “Alright. Nair, wait a sec.”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “Yeah yeah, sure. Enjoy.”

Floofen ran off towards what looked like a slightly taller dirt structure with a red banner hanging off the front. I looked around the camp, scanning it for anything useful. I spotted a large custom chest in the middle of the camp. Inside there was half a stack of some black planks and a stack of dirt.

Main building block, it’s textureful I suppose.

I took a few planks and tried making a crafting table in my inventory, nothing happened.

Crafting tables are a no I guess.

[RED] [Soldier] Neverhast: “Whatcha doing?”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “Nothing. Tried making a crafting table and it doesn’t work.”

[RED] [Solider] Neverhast: “Yeah, pretty sure only blacksmiths can make workbenches.”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “So how did you get your username up there?”

[RED] [Soldier] Neverhast: “Played around with the commands, it’s slash name, whatever name you want. Turns out you can’t use numbers or underscores, it has to be a realistic-ish name.”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “Alright, lemme try.”

</ name Nair />

{Name updated}

[RED] [Soldier] Neverhast: “There you go!”

Floofen peeked out of the taller dirt structure.

[RED] Player: “Nair! Come here.”

[NEUTRAL] Nair: “One sec.”

I jogged over to Floofen and looked inside. The inside was cramped, barely enough room for three players. A figure stood on a dirt block, a golden crown floating above their head.

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “Good job with the barbarian, we haven’t seen much but they’ve already killed a few. Floofen says you didn’t even panic.”

[NEUTRAL] Me: “I mean, I was panicking. Just happened to be clicking a lot while doing it.”

She laughed.

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “I like you. We need more fighters, and people in general. Willing to join RED?”

[NEUTRAL] Nair: “Sure.”

< RED Queen Emily sent you an invitation to join RED. Click {ACCEPT} to join and {DECLINE} to reject. >

< RED joined. >

[RED] Nair: “Looks good. So, what am I doing?”

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “We need fighters the most, any experience with swords or bows before”

[RED] Nair: “I suck at both, that was 26.1.1 but in general, I’m not good at PvP, better at building.”

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “It’s similar, hmm. Builder it is.”

Emily pulled out a big wooden sword with a red gem embedded in it and pointed it at me.

< You are now a Builder of RED >

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Alright. Oh and Floofen? I figured out how to make your name! Do slash name Floofen.”

[RED] Floofen: “Thanks. Emily, you said you’d make me a soldier?”

Emily pointed her sword at him.

[RED] [Soldier] Floofen: “Thanks Emily, did Gamerguy start making tools yet?”

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “You’re welcome. He hasn’t had enough material is all. He and Flowerpot are at the side of the mountain mining right now.”

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Floofen, aren’t there more people spawning that need help?”

[RED] [Soldier] Floofen: “Right. I’ll see you later.”

He ran out the door and sprinted away.

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “We need something a bit safer than a few dirt huts, can you manage?”

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “I’ll try and we’ll see I guess. Seems easy enough.”

I walked out of the dirt hut and looked around again. A few dirt huts scattered around mostly. Just 3 of those barbarians I met earlier and ggs.

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Mind if I take what’s in the chest?”

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “Go ahead.”

I grabbed the rest of the black planks and the dirt stack. Not great, not terrible. Decent. Terrain wasn’t actually too bad for defensing, mountains gave good cover and with enough blocks a wall between the biggest two was possible.

I started placing dirt blocks in a curved line between the two closest mountains, testing the distance. About 40 blocks wide, too big for what I had. I went back inside the tent.

[RED[ [Builder[ Nair: “Emily, how do I get more blocks?”

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “Mining, the terrichest and trading with other factions, that’s mostly resources though, like you’d imagine in a normal medieval setup.”

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Ahh.”

I turned to leave.

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “And Nair? You’re a Builder now so you should have access to new blocks. When I was reading the document it said that Builders can make mallets? Didn’t say what they’re used for though. Nathan made the document well, only a little information.”

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “I’ll have to read that sometime, I’m guessing it’s how you know all the terrichest and mallet things. Send me the link in Discord? It’s lowercase nair underscore”

[RED] [Queen] Emily: “Sure.”

I walked outside and kept placing dirt until I ran out. I sprint-jumped towards the mountain with the mine, finding a rough hole carved into the mountain side. The sound of pickaxes echoed from inside.

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Hello?”

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: “Down here!”

I dropped down a few blocks and found two players hacking away at stone. One had a custom wooden pickaxe and the other was using what looked like a sharpened rock.

[RED] [Miner] Flowerpot: “Hello hello, here to help us?”

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Yup. How can I make a pickaxe?”

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: “Either I have to make it or you could use a piece of flint. Was a bit just outside.”

I didn’t have anything to get out of the hole with so I started punching the wall with my fist.

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: “It doesn’t work. Tried and it’s like 40 minutes for one piece.”

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Damn. Guess I’m stuck here with you until you’re done.”

[RED] [Miner] Flowerpot: “Could be worse, could be fighting barbarians.”

She had a point. I stood and watched them work, the rhythmic clinking filling the small space. Flowerpot’s pickaxe looked way more efficient than Gamerguy’s flint thing.

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “How long have you guys been playing?”

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: “Server went live like 7 minutes ago. Emily got on first and claimed Queen, then Floofen, then me and Flowerpot joined together.”

[RED] [Miner] Flowerpot: We’re roomates IRL, saw the server announcement on the forums.”

Roomates? Lucky.

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “How many people does RED have?”

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: “Just us as far as I know.”

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “So Emily, Floofen, Neverhast, and you two?”

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: “Don’t know who Neverhast is but probably.”

I sit down on a stone block, watching the two of them work. My hunger bar ticks down a notch. Forgot about food. The chest didn’t have any either which means someone needs to figure that out soon or we’re all gonna start starving in like ten minutes.

[RED] [Builder] Nair: So what does being a blacksmith give you?”

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: “I can make a workbench, how I made Chloe—Flowerpot’s pickaxe.”

[RED] [Miner] Flowerpot: “It’s fine Zack. So yeah, I’m Chloe and he’s Zack. How about you, is Nair your real name?”

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Nearly, it’s Nate.”

My Discord pings loudly.

Document!

Emily 10:39am

heres teh document factionfall.md

Factionfall: Yes, the barbarians are that bad. No, I am not fixing them. Resources are territory-locked so grab land when you can.

The factions are Red, Blue, Green, Gold, Purple and White. With the roles as backbone: Builder, Blacksmith, Miner, Farmer, Merchant, Sailor. Offensive: Mage, Soldier, Moderator, King/Queen.

Builders: mallets + land claims via territowers. Blacksmiths: weapons and tools via workbenches. Miners: pry blocks loose without mining them out. Farmers: bundle crops, produce bonemeal and fertilizer. Merchants: bigger inventory, can close deals. Sailors: board ships, swim faster, read maps, use spyglasses. Mages: cast through spell scrolls. Soldiers: attributes, shields, armor. Moderators: raid inventories, carry jail keys. Kings/Queens: assign roles with the Royal Blade.

So.. I can make territowers? Cool.

[RED] [Builder] Nair: "Yo, Zack, how do I make a mallet?"

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: "Mallet? Like the hammer thingy? No idea.”

[RED] [Miner] Flowerpot: "Document says builders make 'em. So like, look in your inventory?"

I open my inventory and scroll through. Nothing but the empty slots staring back at me in silence.[RED] [Builder] Nair: "Nope. Nothing. Maybe I have to be at a workbench?"

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy: "Could be. Once we finish mining I'll try it out.”.

[RED] [Miner] Flowerpot: "We need quite a bit though, it'll take a while."

[RED] [Builder] Nair: "Dang...”

My hunger ticks down another notch. Yeah, this is gonna be a problem.

[RED] [Builder] Nair: “Anyone got food by the way? My hunger’s like halfway.”

[RED] [Blacksmith] Gamerguy “Same. Haven’t seen any. Maybe Farmers spawn with seeds or something?”

[RED] [Miner] Flowerpot: “We don’t have a farmer though.”
